Duck eggs sell for $5–12 per dozen at farmers markets. They are larger than chicken eggs and prized by bakers.

At these inputs the flock does not break even on eggs alone — treat duck keeping as a low-cost hobby with side benefits rather than a money-maker here.

Your flock of 4 first-year light/layer ducks should produce around 1,100 eggs (92 dozen) per year — worth about $550.00 at typical duck-egg prices. After feed costs of $264.00 annually, you net $286.00 in savings. At that rate, a $250.00 setup pays for itself in roughly 10 months.

Do ducks lay more eggs than chickens?

For the best laying breeds, yes. Khaki Campbells lay up to 300 eggs per year, more than almost any chicken breed. Indian Runners come in around 250. Compare that to standard chicken layers at 220 to 260 per year for the productive breeds, and the duck looks competitive or better.

The surprise that follows is size. Duck eggs are significantly larger than chicken eggs, about 30 percent heavier, so a year of Khaki Campbell laying produces noticeably more egg by weight than the egg count alone suggests.

A note on who built this. I am a software developer, not a market gardener selling eggs at a stall. I built this calculator because backyard duck economics are poorly documented online and usually borrowed from chicken numbers that do not transfer. The production figures here are calibrated against waterfowl laying data. If your flock performs differently, the contact page is at the top of the site.

Duck egg advantages

  • Size. Large duck eggs are prized by bakers for their extra fat, extra protein, and richer flavor.
  • Shelf life. They keep longer than chicken eggs thanks to a thicker shell and membrane.
  • Allergy crossover. Some people with chicken egg sensitivities tolerate duck eggs.
  • Premium price. The farmers market price of $6 to $12 per dozen is real and consistent, not a one-off.

Seasonal laying patterns

Most domestic ducks have a strong seasonal laying cycle, with heavy spring production and a reduction through fall and winter. Khaki Campbells and Runners are the most consistent year-round layers of the common breeds.

Muscovy behave differently. They lay in clutches, go broody, raise ducklings, and then repeat the cycle, so their output comes in waves rather than a steady daily stream. Supplemental light helps maintain winter laying in the laying breeds, but the effect is less predictable than it is in chickens.

Common mistakes

  1. Expecting year-round production from Pekin or Rouen. They drop significantly in fall.
  2. Not collecting eggs frequently. Ducks often lay in wet areas and eggs get dirty fast.
  3. Comparing duck eggs to chicken eggs on price per egg instead of per ounce. Duck eggs are about 30 percent heavier.
  4. Not separating nesting areas from water. Eggs that get wet spoil faster.

Frequently asked questions

How many eggs do Khaki Campbell ducks lay per year?

About 280 to 320 per year, making them the most productive egg-laying duck breed and competitive with the best laying chicken breeds.

Are duck eggs better than chicken eggs for baking?

Yes, widely. Bakers prize duck eggs for their larger yolks, higher fat content, and the volume they add to cakes, pastries, and pasta. The difference is noticeable.

Do ducks lay eggs every day?

Laying breeds like Khaki Campbell come close โ€” 5-6 eggs per week at peak. Heavy meat breeds lay significantly less frequently.

When do ducks start laying eggs?

Most domestic ducks start laying at 4-7 months. Khaki Campbells are often ready at 4 months. Muscovy take closer to 6-7 months.

How long do ducks lay eggs?

Productive egg-laying ducks lay actively for 3 to 5 years. Production decline is gentler than in chickens โ€” a 4-year-old Khaki Campbell often still lays well.
